Top Tips Course
Giving the child lots of praise and setting life goals can help motivate them. The activities below are designed to help you do this.
The 3 activities take just 10 mins per day:
- Aim to try all 3 activities in 1 week, what days will you do the tasks?
- Do them with the child, in a quiet place with no distractions.
- Do each task on different days, to stop the child becoming overwhelmed.
Remember that is more important that the child is trying their best, then what they are achieving. Giving the child lots of praise to help build their confidence.
Task 1 Fact Based Praise
Use Fact Based Praise card
- Learn how to encourage the child by reading the “Fact Based Praise” card.
Try then to use fact based praise daily, when helping the child with schoolwork or during an activity.
Task 2 Reward Chart
Use Reward Chart Card
Help a dyslexic child complete tasks by working towards a reward.
- Explain to the child what a reward chart is and how they will be working towards a reward.
- Agree with the child what tasks they will need to complete in 1 week and what reward they will get.
- Make a Reward Chart using the “Reward Chart” card, get the child to complete it in 1 week.
Use the reward chart to motivate the child. Remind them about the reward they are working towards.
The tasks do not have to be completed everyday for a week. It’s ok to have rest days for the child in-between.

Task 3 Goal Ladder
Use Goal Ladder Card
Help a dyslexic child to set-life goals and break them down into step by step tasks.
- Talk to the child about a life goal they want to achieve. This could be following a hobby or a future career.
- Ask the child to come-up with ideas about what they need to, do to achieve the life goal.
- Break the life goal down into achievable tasks, using the “Goal Ladder” card
Use the goal ladder to motivate the child. For example to practise a sport, attend a dance club or complete a school project.
Below is a worksheet that you can draw or print for use during the task.
