What is Dyslexia? Explain Simply to a Child

Understanding what is dyslexia can be difficult. Then trying to explain to a child that has found out they have dyslexia, in way they understand is a challenge. When it became clear that like me, my little girl may have dyslexia. I sat down to talk to her about this. The first thing she asked was, “What is Dyslexia?”.

Here is my simple children’s guide to dyslexia, so you can answer your child’s questions about dyslexia. All the information is based on scientific research.

What is Dyslexia?

Start talking about “What is dyslexia?”, by finding out what the child already knows. They may have other children in their class with dyslexia. Or they may have heard children talking about it in the play ground. Some of the information they know maybe untrue and even scary for the child. Play these fun games, to start talking about dyslexia and to teach them the truth.

The dyslexic brain is different. So it finds it hard to read and write. It is better at creative things, like art and making things. Play this “Right and Left Brain” game, to help the child understand how the dyslexic brain is different.
