History of dyslexia true facts:
People have always had dyslexia. The Victorians were the first to recognise its symptoms. They called it “Word Blindness.” They noticed that intelligent children struggled with reading and writing.
In the 1920s, Samuel Orton, a pioneer of dyslexia-friendly teaching methods, began researching how to teach dyslexic children. He developed multi-sensory learning techniques.
From the 1960s to the 1970s, more research on dyslexia took place. Support for dyslexic children was introduced in schools. The British Dyslexia Association was formed in 1972.
It was not until 2010 that the U.K. Equality Act included dyslexia. This recognised dyslexia as a protected disability. It ensures that dyslexic people cannot be discriminated against in education or the workplace. Legally, reasonable adjustments must be made.
