Teach dyslexic kids reading, guide for ages 5-10+

Help a dyslexic child learn to read using the reading staircase. Teachers often use the reading staircase to teach reading. It simplifies learning new words into easy steps. Each step helps the child learn new word sounds. Fun word games, like rhyming or clapping syllables, can make this enjoyable.

What is the reading staircase?

The “Reading Staircase” shown on the card above is a step-by-step guide for teaching reading. It ensures a child builds strong foundations. They should master each step before moving on to the next, to avoid the child having gaps in their learning.

Dyslexic children can struggle in school when they have gaps in their learning. This leads to weak foundations in reading, writing, and spelling. A child with weak foundations may find it tough to read and write simple words of two to four letters.

The Reading Staircase helps children practise basic word sounds. This boosts their reading skills. Being a good reader can also help a child to become better a writing and spelling.

To get the most from the Reading Staircase card above, follow theses top tips:

  •  Take it step by step – Each step on the reading staircase has a card with a fun game. Play the game with the child. If they match the correct words and sounds, you can move on to the next step. You can also play again for more practice.
  • Look for gaps in learning – Focus on one step at a time on the “Reading Staircase.” If the child struggles, it shows a gap in their learning. They may need extra help in this area to become a better reader.
  • Try learning new words – The fun games on the “Reading Staircase” cards can be played repeatedly. Use the “Words List” cards to practise more words and sounds. The more the child practises, the better they will get at reading and writing.
