How to Help a Child with Dyslexia in the Classroom, Reasonable Adjustments

Albert Einstein famously said. “Everybody is a genius.But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid”.

I attended school in the 1980s, it was an unhappy, unrewarding experience. Even then as a young child I knew something was not right, that I was different. Even when I tried my hardest in class, I seemed still to get into trouble. Made to feel stupid, lazy by the teachers. I know now I am dyslexic. Like many dyslexic children I was not stupid, I just needed teaching in a different way. A dyslexia friendly way.

Dyslexic Friendly Teaching

Dyslexic kids learn best by multi-sensory learning. When being taught new information, new words. It is best if they can see, hear and even feel it. For example if a child learning to spell the word “Shell”. Seeing a picture of a shell, hearing the word shell, even touching shells would help them learn.

The simple plan below to can be used to practising multi-sensory learning at home or in the classroom. To help a dyslexic child learn to read, write and spell new words.

  • Read it –  Write the word on the sheet, ask the child to read it.
  • See it – Show the child a picture of the word. Draw or use a computer.
  • Write it – Keep the word covered, ask the child to write the word down.‍
  • If they can’t write the word down, ask them to copy the word.

Dyslexia Help in Classroom

Teachers in the classroom can make changes, to help dyslexic children best learn. These are called “Reasonable Adjustments”, see card below for examples. You can also make these adjustments at home, when helping your child with homework.

Exams Special Arrangements

Dyslexic child are entitled to special arrangements during exams. This includes having extra time and an assistant to help them write. See link below for more information.
