How to teach 1, 2, 3 letter words, dyslexic kids aged 5-10+

Help a dyslexic child improve reading and writing by building a strong foundation in English. Children who know the alphabet and can read, write, and spell basic words will find it easier to learn new information. They will face fewer challenges in class.

If a dyslexic child has gaps in their learning, help them relearn basic words before moving on to harder tasks by using the card below.

Rocky Foundations Card

Use the ‘Rocky Foundations’ card below to help a dyslexic child learn basic words and build strong foundations. This card from Mooki Cards is based on scientific research, “Reading Development & dyslexia”.

Struggling with rocky foundations

Read how having rocky foundations in reading and writing affected the Dyslexic Mum when learning at school:

As a child I struggled at school with learning to read and write. Later my teachers used to say the more you read, the better your writing and spelling will be. Well I read, I loved reading, yet never became any better. Special Educational Needs support did not exist and school unhelpful. The teachers appeared not to believe me, when I said I read every night and I quickly found myself labelled as lazy.

The problem with my learning was that I had never mastered the basics in reading and writing. I had rocky foundations, my knowledge of basic two, three letters words was patchy. This meant I could muddle through schoolwork. Sometimes I could spell simple words, then I could not spell other similar words. So it appeared I was lazy, not trying. This made it harder for me to learn new things. I needed to be taken back to basics, to learn at my own pace. To build those strong foundations in reading and writing, before being moved on to new work.”

When using the Rocky Foundations card with a dyslexic child, look for any gaps in their learning. If you find any, use the “Multi-sensory learning” and “Rule of 10” cards. These will help them read, write, and spell words in a dyslexic-friendly way. See links to more helpful cards below:
