Word Families Phonetics

  • Words can be grouped into “Word Families”. Placed in a group with words that share the same word sounds. Such as rat, hat and sat. There are many word families, if a child is able to group words by sounds they will become better at reading.
  • For a child to be able to group words that share the same sounds. They need to be able to break words down into phonetical sounds. This shows they understand how words are structured, so they can read and write them easier.
  • Word Families is step 4 on the “Reading Staircase”. Practising all the steps on the reading staircase. Helps the child build strong foundations in reading and they will do better at school.
