Get organised for school dyslexia, try picture time-table

Learn how to use a picture timetable to help dyslexic children to get organised. Dyslexic children are creative people, they think better in pictures, colours and patterns. Struggling with memory and the order of events, they find it hard to remember dates and facts.

Attaching memory tags to dates, information, helps the dyslexic mind remember. Do this by attaching a picture, colour or story to an instruction. For example a picture of a guitar on the door of the music room, would help a child remember the use of that room.

Get organised dyslexia

Learn below how the dyslexic mum struggled to help her dyslexic child to get organised:

“Do you remember forgetting your PE kit for school or forgetting your homework yet again? The worry that you will get punished, made to do lines or even put on detention. Kids do so many activities at school now, P.E, music practise, cooking lessons, swimming. It is so hard to remember everything they need to bring.

I am dyslexic, so get easily confused, sending my child to school in uniform on P.E day. When children are younger it is up to the parents to get the child organised. Now my child is getting older, I wanted to help her become more independent. Like me she is dyslexic and struggles with organisation. To help her we made a picture time table together, to help her remember what she needs to bring to school and when.”

Use the โ€œSchool Time-tableโ€ card to make a picture time-table. Below are tips about how to use the card to best help the child:

  • Match Pictures to Subjects – If the child has music on Monday, write on the time-table music.  Then draw a picture of a musical instrument.
  • Decorate Time-table – Use stickers, pictures from magazine on the timetable.  Allow the child to decorate, adding a patterned border.
  • Colour Code Days – Make each day of the week a different colour.  For example write Tuesday in blue and Thursday in Orange.
  • Keep on Display – Look at the time-table everyday and pack their school bag for the next day.  Keep it on display at all times, have more than one copy on the fridge, at the front door or next to bed.
